THE CHILEAN FRANCISCO LOPEZ CONTARDO ON HONDA BEATS COMA AND WINS THE FIRST STAGE

After Matteo Graziani's victory in the prologue of Lido di Camaiore, the first stage of the Rally di Sardegna is won by the Chilean Francisco Contardo

After Matteo Graziani's victory in the prologue of Lido di Camaiore in Tuscany, the first stage of the Rally di Sardegna, the motorcycle race valid for the Cross-Country World Championship, smiled to the Chilean Francisco Contardo Lopez. The South-American pilot, riding a Honda Crf 450 (450 Class), won the Olbia-Gavoi stage of 316 km with a special stage of 88 km (Piras-Mamone di Bitti), among the mountains of Padru, Buddusò, Alà dei Sardi and Bitti. Right behind Lopez arrived the World Champion and Winner of the last two editions of the Rally di Sardegna, the Spanish Marc Coma (525 Ktm Exc, Class 450), who preceded his compatriot Jose Manuel Pellicer (Ktm Exc 525, Class 450). Fourth place for the French David Casteu (Ktm Exc 525, Class 450) vice-champion of the world, right before the first of the Italian Paul Ceci (Aprilia Rxv, Class 250). Seventh the winner of Tuesday's special, Matteo Graziani. The only Sardinian in the contest, Enrico Montalbano (Ktm Exc 450, Class 250) from Cagliari came 12th. In the Overall Clasification Lopez is first, chased by Coma,  Pellicer is third , fourth place for Casteu, Ceci is fifth, Montalbano twelfth. A beautiful Special, different from last year's edition, with a technical route and a navigated Special, with ideal racing conditions. The stony bottom,  joined to the observation of the road book  strained the 22 pilots who participate to the world-wide contest. For the conditions of the street bottom, under certain aspects, the race facilitated the Italian pilots, more accustomed to this type of conditions. The first to leave from Olbia was Graziani, but a small inconvenience penalized the multi-winner of the Sardegna, so much that after 230 km he was overtaken by Casteu. Then the French suffered a problem to his bike and was overtaken by Coma. The two then made the race together. Serious problem for the Portuguese Helder Rodrigues (Yamaha Wr 450, Class 250), who in order to cross a wade embarked water to his bike, compromising the Special. Coma confirms his ambitions of the eve but the true surprise is Lopez, who at the start of the race had declared of simply wanting to end in the first ten. At the rally it's being tried also to check the world-wide superpower of the Ktm. The Chilean Francisco Lopez Contardo (Honda) is trying,  like the Portuguese Ruben Faria on Yamaha together with Paul Ceci on his Aprilia. But it seems almost an impossible mission. Tomorrow Thursday May 3rd is the day of the 2nd stage Gavoi-Oristano (Km 308) with one special of 108 km. And from Oristano will also start the test of the Italian Championship.
